Feng Mantian, master of the zhongruan, National Class One Performer of the China National Traditional Orchestra, inheritor of the Ruanxian art, and restorer of Chinese traditional culture. Born in 1963, he began studying violin at the age of four under the Russian violinist Bachyev, and later studied under his father, Feng Shaoxian, a master of the yueqin, learning the yueqin, zhongruan, and other plucked instruments. In 1978, he was admitted to the China National Traditional Orchestra, where he has served as a performer and soloist to this day, touring extensively with the ensemble worldwide. In 2014, he won the championship title of CCTV’s program Brilliant Chinese (Chucai Zhongguoren), bringing unprecedented public attention to the art of the ruanxian through his highly creative performances.
